Dear Residents and Friends,

How time flies! July marks my first year as Mayor of the South East District. In that time, it has been my privilege to witness how South East CDC works with our strong network of partners for the community — whether it is to aggregate resources to help the vulnerable in the district, build capabilities and capacities in volunteers and partners, or connect our community by engaging different partners across the People, Private and Public sectors to identify, develop and drive initiatives for the benefit of all.

Take for instance the Neighbours for Active Living Programme, which started off as a partnership between Changi General Hospital (CGH) and South East CDC. COVID-19 threatened to derail the programme as volunteers were no longer able to spend time with the beneficiaries in person. To overcome this challenge, the South East CDC and CGH partnered organisations like Filos Community Services and Bethesda Care Services to help volunteers pick up tele-befriending skills. This ensured continued benefits to the seniors from the programme in spite of COVID-19. Our partner organisations also benefitted from the new partnerships forged, as their arsenal of skills and capabilities was further developed in the process.

This ability to be nimble and navigate new challenges has allowed the South East CDC to be of aid to residents through challenging periods. One perfect example would be the $1.9 million worth of donations and sponsorships garnered via our partners during this ongoing pandemic. It enabled the South East CDC to cater to different groups of residents who were affected by COVID-19 in various degrees to receive help in modes of funding, schemes and awards.

Within this short timeframe, I have learnt many things, but the most valuable lesson thus far has been the realisation that we cannot do our good work alone. As the saying goes, “If you want to go fast. Go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Our partners and volunteers from all walks of life enrich our journey of doing good by willingly and readily contributing their time, expertise and knowledge. Our journey together is not one which we can express in few words. We are glad that we can count on Contact South East to profile a few of these stories now and then. We hope that our stories will inspire you to be a part of the community and play your part as you find new meaning in the co-ownership. As we look towards our nation’s 56th birthday, let us come together and pledge to build a brighter tomorrow for all.
